Why should landlords provide Students Network Access?
1. A property with the internet pre-installed and charged for within the rent is attractive for many students, as often they will not be in residence over the summer, and Christmas breaks, however it can take several weeks to reconnect a internet provider after disconnection.
By you the landlord providing this service all year round, it enables these delays to be largely avoided
2. Most students now require broadband for coursework, and to be able to communicate with friends and family back home. Most would have used broadband before University. 90% will have used a broadband connection in their first year living in University-owned accommodation.
3. It is usually cheaper for a landlord to install permanently, rather than have it installed and removed each year by each group of residents, attracting fresh installation charges.
Internet Providers
There are currently a number of Broadband providers in the UK, we would recommend Talk Talk. Its prices, and reliability are estreamly good, the prices do varied but would typically depend on the connection speed you require.
For a property with four or less bedrooms we would recommend AOL silver 2Mb - 4mb service at £14.99 a month, or a Talk Talk equivalent
For a property with five or more bedrooms we would recommend AOL platinum 4mb - 8mb service currently £29.99 a month, or a Talk Talk equivalent
What happens after broadband has been activated?
You will now need to consider the best way to provide access in each of your rooms
Wireless Access
Wireless networking can be used to share a broadband connection around a house. It is superficially attractive, this is due to being no need for cables, however there may be problems with old properties with thick walls, and may not always be effective in large properties, as some rooms will be out of range.
The signal can also on occasions experience dropouts due to interference from other signals, lastly If not set up correctly others may be able to access your network.
Cable Access
Cable can be used to provide access to each room. somewhat less attractive, we would normally suggest the cables are concealed behind trunking. Cable networks will allow for greater speeds, and privacy, superior to that of wireless access. Once installed cable will provide both a reliable, and resilient system, and will not be effected by weak signals like wireless installations
Cable and Wireless
By combining both methods, you benefit both from the reliability of cable system and the moveability of wireless
How long does it take.
The connection of broadband to the property on average takes seven days as BT will normally need to make changes to your phone line, however the installation of the network will normally take just one , depending on the size of the property.
